Last Friday, the University made an important step forward to support UMP and our statewide clinical mission with an offer to acquire Fairview’s 50% interest in the Clinics and Surgery Center Joint Venture (CSC JV).
This proposed investment in the Clinics and Surgery Center is more than a financial decision. It’s a commitment to our mission. As the front door for our practice, the CSC serves hundreds of patients each day. The facility was designed to support an unparalleled patient experience, with a focus on promoting collaborative and coordinated care, and enabling cutting-edge clinical research.
In addition, this offer moves us closer to our bold all-Minnesota solution, which positions Minnesota to tackle its most pressing healthcare challenges. The integrated approach we’ve proposed in partnership with Essentia Health will be transformational. It will free up resources that can be focused on improving healthcare quality and outcomes; managing costs; expanding access for patients across the state, and equipping providers to best serve patients and their families with the highest quality of care.
It also will allow us to maximize the benefits of the University’s teaching, training, and research missions. Our commitment to health and medical education must remain strong. Nearly 70% of the state’s physicians and other health professionals train at the University of Minnesota. Keeping that healthcare talent pipeline strong and growing will benefit all Minnesotans.
Our agreement with Fairview for the CSC JV expires at the end of this year and this action allows us to maintain consistency in CSC and UMP patient care, service, and experience at the initial point of care as we work through the evolution of our clinical enterprise.
Fairview is a valued and important partner, and we continue to invite them into conversation about working together to provide world-class care to all Minnesotans. As a non-profit entity, we believe they have a responsibility to work with the University and Essentia toward the best possible solution for our patients and Minnesota. At the same time, we are taking decisive action, including making the CSC offer, to begin to realize the vision for our all-Minnesota solution for generations to come.
Sincerely,
Gregg Goldman
